Drug Court Program
The Perth Children's Court has a Drug Court Program. It is a specialised court for young people who use drugs or other substances and have committed a crime.
They can volunteer if they are willing to do a treatment program managed by a magistrate and a team of experts.
If a young person is successful in completing one of the programs they can get a reduced sentence.
There are two programs available. The Youth Supervised Treatment Intervention Regime for 3 months. Or Drug Court for up to 12 months.
A young person can decide to leave the program at any time.
The court can also refuse to continue with a young person in the program. This can happen if they commit further crimes or if they are not doing everything they are required to do.
Rehabilitation
The program focuses on rehabilitation and counselling.
This is to enable a young person to change their behaviours. By doing that they should not commit other crimes.
Education
The program educates people about substance abuse.
It also helps them find other ways to deal with things.
Growth
Part of the program is about making young people better people.
It teaches them to set goals and build relationships.
The Process
If it is decided by the court that a young person is suitable for the Drug Court, they will be put on Drug Court bail. That bail requires:
- A urine test 1-3 times a week.
- Counselling and/or treatment. This might include detox or residential rehab.
- Going to court once a fortnight.
- Being open to changing and talking about some difficult subjects.
